Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
