Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
