Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
