Just as Storm Claudia swept through the northwest the previous evening, the home side swept Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.
Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United
This result represented consecutive WSL defeats for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.
United’s ability to balance domestic and continental soccer with a thin team has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the UCL. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the period that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the away side, they looked weary all game, the landmark win against the French side clearly having had an impact.
Team Changes
Marc Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a a few alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.
City, in opposition, have no such loading issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.
Dominant First Half
The pressure started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose potent attack controlled and dismantled the opposition with a sublime opening period showing that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.
This put the hosts firmly in control and left United all at sea. Before this encounter, the away side had allowed just a handful in this league campaign but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's attacking flair.
Early Chances
The early indicators came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything from the start, exploiting the room left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right side. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a rapid change in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the room to drive a shot home from outside the box.
Final Period
The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- City player Park came nearest, rattling the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to record a single shot on target.
The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have wins against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a commanding situation after the opening fixtures.
