RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
