Christantus Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
